Framework Contract Extended: Bundeswehr Orders 30mm Ammunition for Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicles from Rheinmetall – New Order Worth Several Hundred Million Euros https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2121 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2121#respond Tue, 06 Jan 2026 20:02:22 +0000 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2121

Framework Contract Extended: Bundeswehr Orders 30mm Ammunition for Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicles from Rheinmetall – New Order Worth Several Hundred Million Euros

The Bundeswehr has once again placed an order with Rheinmetall for 30mm ammunition for Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs). The German Armed Forces placed the order for additional cartridges as part of an extended framework contract concluded in 2022. The new order is worth several hundred million euros.
In December 2022, the Bundeswehr signed a framework contract with Rheinmetall for the supply of 30mm x 173 ammunition for the Puma IFV. This framework contract, which runs until 2029, has now been extended in terms of delivery quantity and order volume. It provides for the delivery of several hundred thousand cartridges worth around €1 billion. At the same time, a medium six-figure quantity of ammunition was retrieved. The order intake amounts to several hundred million euros.

To strengthen its Puma fleet, the German Armed Forces recently commissioned joint venture partners Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland to supply 200 additional IFV’s. The Puma is equipped with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM (Airburst Munition) machine gun. It combines a high rate of fire with programmable state-of-the-art ammunition technology. This makes the MK30-2/ABM an extremely reliable and uncompromising weapon system. With an effective range of over 2,000 metres, the MK30-2/ABM is extremely powerful against land, air and sea targets.

Rheinmetall is a key supplier of combat ammunition to the Bundeswehr. The corporation produces and supplies two types of combat ammunition for the Puma IFV: KE-TF DM21 and KE DM33 in 30 mm x 173 calibre. Both types of ammunition have been developed and certified in accordance with the latest standards, offering unrivalled reliability, effectiveness, penetration and precision worldwide. The programmable KE-TF (Kinetic Energy Time Fuse) ammunition is highly reliable and enables the Puma IFV to engage larger soft and semi-hard surface targets, as well as drones.

The order underscores Rheinmetall’s position as a leading supplier of 30mm medium-calibre ammunition to the Bundeswehr. It reflects the armed forces’ efforts to replenish their stocks and increase their ammunition reserves in light of the current security situation. Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medium-calibre ammunition.

Secretary of the Army Visits the Army’s Center of Excellence for Guns and Ammunition https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2067 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2067#respond Sun, 14 Dec 2025 01:15:13 +0000 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=2067

PICATINNY ARSENAL, NJ — Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Army David Fitzgerald, and U.S. Representative Thomas Kean Jr. visited Picatinny Arsenal on November 6 to see first-hand the innovative work being by the Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments and Ammunition (JPEO A&A), U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center, and Office of the Project Manager Soldier Lethality as they strengthen the Arsenal of Freedom by increasing industrial capacity and bringing advanced technologies and improved lethality to the Warfighter. The visit was Driscoll’s first to Picatinny, which is designated as the Department of War’s Joint Center of Excellence for Guns and Ammunition.

The visit began with a hands-on demonstration of the lethality of the 6.8mm ammunition for the M7 Next Gen Squad Weapon. The rounds will be produced at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant outside St. Louis in an interim capacity until completion of a new, state-of-the-art facility that is currently under construction. Sig Sauer is also producing the new rounds as a second source in Jacksonville, Arkansas. DEVCOM and JPEO engineers explained to Secretary Driscoll the various 6.8mm technical innovations and the new ammunition’s performance specs as compared to currently fielded 5.56mm and 7.62mm capabilities.

Developed collaboratively by the JPEO A&A, the DEVCOM Armaments Center, the Army Research Laboratory, the 6.8mm family of ammunition is specifically engineered to maximize the performance of the M7 Rifle and the M250 Automatic Rifle. When fired through these Next Generation Squad Weapons, 6.8mm rounds deliver increased range, improved accuracy, and enhanced lethality, ensuring Soldiers maintain overmatch on the battlefield.

Driscoll attended a working lunch where Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments & Ammunition and Picatinny’s Commanding General, and other senior leaders highlighted the diverse capabilities and critical missions of the major commands and tenant organizations at the installation, underscoring Picatinny’s enduring role in supporting joint force operations and sustaining combat power.

“I have had the privilege of doing nine ribbon-cutting ceremonies here in the past two years,” Reim said. “We are bringing new capabilities online. We are replacing legacy production methods and working closely with industry partners to develop modular, flexible production capabilities that can support a surge while maintaining efficiencies during downtimes.”

The visit continued with a bang as Driscoll witnessed a live fire exercise featuring the Purpose Built Attritable System (PBAS) and a TRV-150 drone dropping smoke and a M69 training grenade onto a target simulating a small group of enemy soldiers with a vehicle. This showed off one of DEVCOM’s latest innovations, the Picatinny Common Lethality Integration Kit or Picatinny CLIK, which defines the physical interface (mechanical attachment), electrical interface (power, network, messaging) and safety critical architecture between the ground station control and an unmanned aerial system (UAS) with lethal payloads, eliminating unique integration methods and costly acquisition conditions created by “vendor lock.”

“This ensures a rigorous, yet flexible, process for evaluating, qualifying, procuring, and ultimately fielding safe and effective weaponized UAS payloads to the joint force,” said acting Executive Director of the Armaments Center’s Weapons and Software Engineering Center, Bhavanjot Singh. “When we solicit industry for a capability, we will be providing Picatinny CLIK technical data so industry can focus on providing lethal capabilities without worrying nearly as much about integration.”

Following the live fire demonstration, Driscoll was shown more of the unique capabilities developed at Picatinny Arsenal by the DEVCOM Armaments Center and the Project Manager offices under JPEO A&A covering lethal UAS, counter-UAS munitions, advanced artillery, and next-gen energetics.

One highlighted counter-UAS capability was the airburst proximity fuze technology that was initially fielded in 30mm XM1211 High Explosive Proximity (HEP) for M-LIDS, providing the first medium caliber counter-UAS capability to theater. Leveraging the capability, the proximity fuze technology was scaled down to a 25mm form factor for the XM1228 Bradley Aerial Defeat Ground Enhanced Round (BADGER). BADGER provides organic C-UAS capabilities to the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle with no additional vehicle or weapon modification required.

“BADGER is a great example of how the Army’s acquisition enterprise is moving toward quicker returns by leveraging new ways of doing business, quickly innovating at the round, and leveraging existing weapons platforms to enhance the lethality of our Warfighters,” said Reim.

Another counter-UAS capability developed at Picatinny Arsenal and presented to Driscoll was the next generation Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS). The implementation of a C-UAS capability for platforms with current or future CROWS allows for leveraging of existing 30mm and 40mm weapon systems and proximity-fuze ammunition, providing a low-cost kinetic C-UAS solution across multiple platforms.

Artillery innovations as part of the Army’s Long Range Prevision Fires line of effort are another critical capability area at Picatinny that was presented to Driscoll.

The M982 Excalibur is a 155mm Global Positioning System (GPS) guided precision cannon artillery munition compatible with 39-caliber, 52-caliber and 58-caliber artillery systems with reach distances of up to 40 kilometers, 50 kilometers and 70 kilometers, respectively. Excalibur was co-developed by Raytheon and BAE Systems Bofors and is currently in production to deliver projectiles to the US Army. The projectile is being evaluated for system upgrades to improve performance in GPS-jammed environments leveraging lessons learned and telemetry data from Ukraine.

The Extended Range Artillery Projectile (ERAP), also known as the XM1155 program, is a cutting-edge system of systems designed to deliver unprecedented lethality and range overmatch for 155mm artillery weapon systems. With ranges exceeding more than double those of legacy artillery cannons, the ERAP will be compatible with both current and future Army mobile howitzer systems. The ERAP program is being executed through the innovative Middle Tier of Acquisition pathway, which leverages both traditional and non-traditional suppliers. This approach fosters competition among industry partners and accelerates the prototyping of mature technologies, ensuring that hardware is delivered to Soldiers faster and more effectively.

The Modular Artillery for Combat Effectiveness (MACE) program was discussed, which is an effort to focus on making conventional artillery more manufacturable and modular. Enhanced manufacturability will reduce dependency on niche, government only production processes and leverage commercial production capabilities and capacity.

Following the tours and demonstrations, Driscoll presented coins to the various organizations.

The Secretary of the Army’s visit to Picatinny underscored the installation’s vital role in sustaining the force and arming the Army of the future. As the Army continues to modernize and adapt to evolving global demands, the various commands at Picatinny Arsenal remain a pillar of readiness – delivering the capabilities, expertise, and innovation that ensures our Warfighters and allies are equipped to succeed in any environment.

HOP Munitions and SOAA Join Forces to Advance Responsible Firearm Ownership and Veteran Wellness https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1986 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1986#respond Tue, 25 Nov 2025 22:49:55 +0000 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1986

HOP Munitions, a veteran-operated ammunition manufacturer, and the Special Operations Association of America (SOAA) are proud to announce a strategic partnership centered on responsible firearm ownership, safe storage, and community wellness. This collaboration seeks to elevate awareness of firearm safety, PTSD education, and mental health within both the veteran and civilian shooting communities.

At its core, the partnership aligns two mission-driven organizations that share a commitment to keeping America safe, America’s veterans, and responsible gun culture. Through thought leadership, educational initiatives, and open dialogue, HOP Munitions and SOAA aim to strengthen understanding around safe firearm practices, suicide prevention, and the physiological impacts of shooting on long-term health.

Bridging Industry and Community

For the men and women of SOAA, veterans who have served at the highest levels of U.S. special operations, responsible firearm ownership is not merely a policy discussion; it’s a lived responsibility. SOAA’s community engagement initiatives focus on addressing real issues such as suicide prevention, PTSD awareness, and the importance of recognizing signs of distress in peers.

“Many gun owners, even within the tactical and sporting communities, don’t always recognize the warning signs that someone may be struggling,” said Daniel Elkins of SOAA. “Our goal with this partnership is to open up those conversations, equip people with knowledge, and build a culture of awareness that saves lives.”

Together, HOP Munitions and SOAA will co-produce educational content and host discussions that encourage open conversations about mental health, including identifying the behavioral cues that precede crises and exploring how our community can intervene responsibly.

Advancing Safety and Performance Through Thought Leadership

This partnership also emphasizes the importance of safety in firearm use, from eye and ear protection to understanding the physiological effects of overpressure in high volume shooting, factors increasingly linked to cognitive and auditory damage in both military and civilian shooters.

“Responsible firearm ownership goes far beyond marksmanship,” said Joe Nook, Chief Executive Officer at HOP Munitions. “It’s about education, awareness, and taking care of the people who take care of others. We’re honored to partner with SOAA to address not only the technical side of shooting but the human side as well, mental health, safe storage, and long-term well-being of our veterans and the 2nd Amendment community.”

HOP Munitions and SOAA plan to co-author a series of expert-led articles that cover:

? Safe storage practices and accident prevention in the home

? Recognizing early indicators of PTSD and suicidal ideation

? The role of overpressure and hearing damage in long-term health

? Community education to promote responsible ownership and safe handling of firearms

These initiatives will be featured on both organizations’ platforms and shared across national media outlets, bringing expert-driven discussions to the forefront of the firearms industry.

A Partnership with Purpose

Both organizations share a unified goal: to protect, educate, and empower.

For HOP Munitions, that means producing high-quality, American-made ammunition while giving back to the community that shaped its values.

For SOAA, it means leveraging the experiences of America’s veterans to improve mental health awareness and foster responsible, informed firearm ownership nationwide.

“Partnerships like this are how real change begins,” said Daniel Elkins. “When the firearms industry and the veteran community come together to focus on wellness, safety, and education, we move the entire culture forward.”

Latvia Orders Rheinmetall Ammunition Factory – Group Expands Global Ammunition Production Network https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1946 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1946#respond Tue, 18 Nov 2025 02:18:21 +0000 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1946

Rheinmetall is further expanding its ammunition production capacity and is now planning to build a modern production facility for 155 mm calibre artillery ammunition in Latvia. In the presence of Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silia, a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding was signed today in Hamburg. The facility shall be operated by a joint venture between Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH (51%) and the Latvian State Defence Corporation, LLC of Latvia (49%). The key points were documented in a memorandum of understanding, which was signed by representatives of both sides.

By establishing its own 155 mm ammunition production facility, Latvia is taking a further step towards strengthening its defence capabilities and expanding its independent defence sector. The produced ammunition is to ensure supplies for the National Armed Forces of Latvia, as well as strengthen security of supply chains and be available to partner countries.

The production line will feature a state-of-the-art production facility, including a shell forging and filling line. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring of 2026, with production expected to start around a year later. The €275 million investment will enable the facility to produce tens of thousands of artillery shells and create at least 150 local jobs. Regional companies and the domestic economy will be integrated into the facility’s value chain.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Sili?a said: “Signing this MoU is a clear step towards strengthening Latvia’s security and developing our defence industry. By aiming to establish partnership with Rheinmetall Latvia not only builds stronger national defence, but also contributes to security of supply in Europe, enhancing industrial capacity as well as facilitating economic growth. I have been directly involved in this process because I believe that investing in our defence industry is investing in the safety and future of our people.”

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: “We are delighted to be able to contribute to Latvia’s national sovereignty in the field of ammunition. At the same time, the production line will strengthen our position as the world’s leading manufacturer of artillery ammunition. At Rheinmetall, we are committed to supporting our customers as a reliable partner with first-class services. I am confident that we will also build similar partnerships for ammunition production in other countries”.

Ingrida Kirse, Board Member of the State Defence Corporation: “With the utmost sense of responsibility, we are taking on the entrusted task of jointly establishing an artillery ammunition production facility in Latvia. I am confident that all the necessary conditions are in place, as this project brings together several essential components. On the one hand, the mission of the State Defence Corporation is to ensure the needs of the National Armed Forces and to foster the development of Latvia’s defence industry by developing manufacturing capacity. On the other hand, Rheinmetall contributes its longstanding expertise, accumulated know-how, high standards, and international recognition. This synergy forms the foundation of a strong partnership that will both advance the industry and strengthen the security of Latvia and the wider region.”

It was only at the end of 2024 that Rheinmetall was commissioned by Latvia’s neighboring Lithuania to build a modern ammunition production facility for artillery shells. Construction of the plant, which is set to begin in a few weeks at the Baisogala site in the heart of Lithuania, mirrors the size and design to the facility planned for Latvia.

AUSA 25 – Northrop Grumman Precision Grenadier System https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1924 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1924#respond Tue, 18 Nov 2025 00:13:56 +0000 https://daily-bullet.com/?p=1924

During AUSA I got to spend some time with a model of the Northrop Grumman Precision Grenadier System which is one of several counter defilade and counter UAS weapon systems currently being evaluated by the US Army.

They’ve been at this project longer than most with early experience during the XM25 Punisher program. A study undertaken years ago for OICW (which the XM25 was derived from) led them to the 25mm ammunition size. Others are using 30mm or even 40mm.

So far, they’ve developed rounds for air-bursting, proximity, close quarter battle as well as target practice and they produce them themselves.

I find the airburst round to be the most impressive. It is a programmable, dual-warhead high-explosive fragmenting round that can be fired in both airburst and point detonate. By dual-warhead they mean that there are explosive charges at both the front and rear of the warhead.

To arm the round, the target is lased (in this case with the XM157) using the middle button. The Grenadier can use the plus and minus buttons above and below the lase button to add or subtract a meter per detent to where the warhead will detonate. This, combined with the dual-warhead would allow for a round to detonate above an open trench or fighting position, or within a room of fired through a window, door, or breach.

The High Explosive Proximity incorporates a proximity sensor to identify and explosively fragment the projectile in-flight to defeat stationary or moving UAS. This round does not require programming.

The CQB round uses buckshot for trench clearing a close-in CUAS.

The training practice round is a marker similar to the 40mm ammunition used in the M320 and is ballistically matched to the 25mm HEAB and 25mm PROX rounds.

Is my understanding that the army is considering replacing the M3 20 grenade launchers in the squad with PGS and that PGS will be the Grenadier’s primary weapon.

Because they selected 25mm, Northrup Grumman offers three round as well as five round removable, box magazines.

Lastly, I’d like to mention that the weapon weighs in at 12.9 lbs loaded with 5 rounds and 11.4 lbs empty and is ambidextrous in controls and ejection. There are ejection ports on either side and the weapon can configured to use either one. For charging, the black lever at the top is spring loaded and nonreciprocating. The shooter pulls it to either side and it snaps back onto the carry position once it is released.
