How tough is the Edelweiss Raid?<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n

When a U.S. team competed in the international military mountaineering contest for the first time in 2019,\u00a0 it made history as the first team ever to\u00a0finish the competition on its inaugural attempt, placing 13th out of 23 teams.<\/p>\n

In two days, teams cover 40 kilometers (24.85 miles) of rugged\u00a0Austrian Alps terrain with up to 14,000 feet of cumulative elevation\u00a0gain, completing various military tasks at 12 stations in the process. They carry a litter\u00a0with their equipment \u2014\u00a0both for challenges and in case of\u00a0real casualty situations.<\/p>\n

U.S. National Guard soldiers\u00a0\u2014 most from Vermont, home of the\u00a0Army Mountain Warfare School and the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain)\u00a0\u2014 returned to Austria earlier this year\u00a0to compete\u00a0in the biennial event. This time, the 16-member U.S. team\u00a0competed in two groups. Both\u00a0finished; one cracked\u00a0the top 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all pretty much call it Type 2\u00a0Fun,\u201d Connecticut National Guard Capt. Scott Stone, one of the U.S. competitors, said. \u201cWhich is basically \u2026 not \u2018Ha ha, we\u2019re all having a good time fun,\u2019\u00a0but it\u2019s one of things that once you\u2019re done with it, it\u2019s a really awesome experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
